Aged...29. Soldier...CO-B 120th Regt New York State VOLS. - Civil War:
The 120th Regiment, also known as the Washington Guards, was among the 300 "fighting regiments" of the war. There were 10 companies (raised mainly in Ulster/Greene County area) in the regiment. It participated in nearly every major battle after Fredericksburg in December 1862, and was on duty at Appomattox when Gen. Robert E Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865. Late in the campaign of 1864 just before its final engagements in March 1865, the regiment received a new flag inscribed with the names of the 16 battles in which it had fought.
